Pools Youth Team kept their title hopes alive with an impressive 4-2 win over leaders Hull City at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.

Micky Barron's men have cut the Tigers' lead at the top to six points but Pools have two games in hand in a title race which looks like going down to the wire.

An excellent game of football at the weekend proved why both these sides are challenging at the top and the difference proved to be Pools' more ruthless edge in front of goal.

"It was an excellent game of football from start to finish," Barron told us.

"From what I have seen so far ourselves and Hull are the two best teams in the division so to get the three points was a real boost for us."

Pools got the edge on their Hull counterparts when Craig Gott's stunning diagonal ball found Matty Tymon who lobbed home as the goalkeeper raced from his line.

However, Hull roared back in to the game when a long ball forward was guided in to the net with a nicely-judged header.

The second half burst in to action when the terrific Callum Proudlock pulled off an outstanding save as Hull mounted the pressure.

But Pools responded well to restore their lead just after the hour mark when Gott again fed Tymon - this time from a corner - and the young striker headed home.

Proudlock was again the hero minutes later when he came out to good effect when Hull's striker skipped clean through on goal, while at the other end Tymon was denied a hat-trick after his header from Joe Race's cross was well saved.

Race then got on the scoresheet himself when he half-volleyed home following another good delivery from Gott and at 3-1 the game looked over.

City kept coming though and broke through to reduce the deficit in the 89th minute when some sloppy defending gave the visitors hope.

But Tymon soon extinguished any chances of City getting back in to it when he tapped in a rebound to complete his hat-trick after the goalkeeper found Gary McRoberts' shot too hot to handle.

"All the players did exactly what we asked of them and it sets us up very nicely for the cup tie with Burnley," Barron added.
