On the day the limelight was supposed to be shining on Adam Boyd, Pools striker Ian Moore stole the headlines with a double strike in a sensational win at Brisbane Road.
Leyton Orient and former Pools man Boyd have started the new campaign in top form but they were blown away by a super-show from Danny Wilson's men.
It was 1-0 inside ten minutes when Moore chased Richard Barker's lofted through-ball. And though Stuart Nelson palmed away his attempted lob, Moore reacted quickly to tuck away the rebound and send the travelling 400 fans in to raptures.
For much of the game Pools seemed to be in cruise control and as they kept Orient at arms length there should have been more goals.
Ritchie Humphreys saw a shot blocked after a burst from full-back and James Brown had two chances that went begging.
The closest Orient came in an exciting first half was when Wayne Gray somehow managed to head wide after Boyd had shown a rare glimpse of his talent to clip a cross to his strike partner.
Pools moved in to top gear after the break though with the tenacious Gary Liddle and the composed Willie Boland running the show from midfield.
Brown darted in to the box and crossed low for Barker who would have scored but for the timely intervention of Orient left-back Paul Terry.
However, excellent closing down work from Moore saw the ball fall for Brown twenty-five yards out and his shot bounced in front of Stuart Nelson and in to the net. Goalkeeping gaff it may have been but Brown and Pools didn't let it worry them.
Just as it looked as if Pools were going to run riot JJ Melligan's shot from thirty yards crept through the grasp of Jan Budtz and crashed in to the net off the underside of the bar.
The goal lifted Orient and they threatened to come back in to it - a hope that seemed to have been snuffed out when Andy Monkhouse crashed home a third for Pools after a neat link-up with substitue Joel Porter.
But the O's refused to give up and their substitute Charlie Daniels - who had earlier been denied by Budtz - crashed home his second chance to make it 3-2.
The home side were roared on by a vociferous crowd and came close on a few occasions before Pools picked them off on the counter-attack.
Michael Mackay picked up possession and threaded the ball inside for Liddle who slid it through for Moore who opened his body and slotted home in injury time.
A throroughly deserved three points for Pools and win that keeps them in third place in League One, just three points behind their hosts at the top.
